Step 4 – Surrogate’s Medical Clearance
Discover what Intended Parents can expect from their surrogate’s medical clearance, from ASRM-guided record reviews to exams, labs, and IVF doctor approval.
The Fourth Step in Your J. Baby Surrogacy Journey
Once you and your surrogate have officially matched, the next milestone is Step 4 – Medical Clearance. This stage is led by your IVF clinic and ensures your surrogate is medically prepared, healthy, and fully qualified to safely carry a pregnancy.
While the J. Baby team supports you throughout this phase, all medical decision-making is handled by your clinical team. Medical clearance is one of the most critical checkpoints in the surrogacy process and lays the foundation for a smooth, healthy pregnancy.
What This Step is Really Designed To Do
Medical clearance is designed to:
- Confirm your surrogate meets ASRM medical guidelines
- Review her prior pregnancies and birth history
- Ensure she is physically ready to proceed safely
- Identify and address any potential medical concerns
- Provide your IVF doctor with confidence to approve the match
This step protects both you and your surrogate by ensuring full clinical readiness before moving forward.
What Happens During Medical Clearance
Review of Prior Pregnancy and Birth Records
Your IVF clinic carefully reviews all medical records from your surrogate’s previous pregnancies and deliveries, following ASRM-established guidelines.
In-Person Physical Exam
Your surrogate visits the IVF clinic for a comprehensive physical exam with the physician overseeing her cycle.
Lab Work
Bloodwork is performed to evaluate hormone levels, infectious disease panels, and other required health markers.
Ultrasound
An ultrasound assesses the uterus, ovaries, and reproductive anatomy to ensure conditions are ideal for embryo transfer.
Doctor Review and Approval
Once all records and test results are received, your IVF physician completes a full medical review. This process typically takes about three weeks.
When everything is approved, your surrogate receives official medical clearance — a major milestone that brings you one step closer to beginning the cycle.
Why This Step Matters
Medical clearance provides peace of mind and clinical certainty. It confirms readiness, ensures safety, and prepares your clinic to build a personalized cycle plan.
Once Step 4 is complete, your journey moves forward to Step 5 – Legal & Insurance.
